UK Professionals Gain LMIA-Exempt Work Permit Access Under New Trade Deal
British professionals in dozens of occupations now have a new option to work in Canada without their Canadian employer first getting a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). On September 1, 2026, the United Kingdom officially joined the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), joining Canada and 10 other countries.
One of the most significant changes is the addition of a new LMIA-exempt work permit option for UK professionals in eligible occupations. The list includes jobs in engineering, technology, finance, business, science, marketing and several other fields. UK citizens with pre-arranged employment in eligible occupations can apply for an LMIA exempt Canadian work permit under CPTPP exemption code T52.
How It Works
Under exemption code T52, UK professionals with pre-arranged Canadian employment in qualified fields can obtain work permits without Canadian employers completing a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA). The updated agreement also streamlines entry for UK investors, intra-company transferees, and business visitors, alongside existing pathways through the International Experience Canada program and the Canada-UK Trade Continuity Agreement.
Eligible Roles
Canada opened the CPTPP professional stream to a wide band of TEER 0 and TEER 1 roles. Engineers of nearly every stripe qualify, along with software developers, architects, financial managers, accountants, data scientists, cybersecurity specialists, and several marketing and business development roles.
For UK professionals: This new pathway means faster hiring—LMIA processing typically takes months, but trade agreement permits can be processed in weeks. If you hold a specialized degree and have a Canadian job offer in an eligible field, you can now skip the lengthy LMIA step entirely and begin working faster.
