Pension Auto-Enrolment Expands to Age 18 in 2026: Early Savers Gain 49+ Years of Growth
The UK will expand automatic pension enrolment to workers aged 18–21 from 2026, removing the current 22-year minimum age. The Lower Earnings Limit will also be eliminated, meaning contributions start from the first pound earned. Younger workers and part-time staff—many of whom are women—stand to gain significantly larger pension pots.
Age and Earnings Thresholds Lowering
Automatic enrolment will extend to workers aged 18, 19, 20, and 21; under current rules these workers must actively opt in, but from 2026 they will be enrolled by default. The Lower Earnings Limit of £6,240 will be removed entirely — meaning pension contributions will be calculated from the very first pound of earnings.
Millions of younger workers and lower-paid employees — many of whom are women and part-time staff — will see larger pension pots over their working lives. The earlier pension saving begins, the longer compound growth has to work.
What This Means for Expat and Student Workers
If you're an expat employee or international student aged 18–21 working in the UK, your employer will automatically enrol you in a workplace pension from the next scheme year, starting contributions from your first pound of earnings rather than waiting until you hit £6,240. This significantly accelerates retirement savings. No single commencement date has been confirmed at the time of publication — employers should monitor announcements from the Department for Work and Pensions at gov.uk. Your employer must contribute at least 3% of qualifying earnings; you contribute 5% (including tax relief). If you're on a short-term visa or expect to leave before retirement, check whether you can reclaim your pot or transfer it home when your UK employment ends.
