HMRC Fast-Tracks Self-Assessment Registration with New 72-Hour Online Service
HMRC launched an improved online Self-Assessment registration service in September 2026, allowing most individuals to receive their Unique Taxpayer Reference within 72 hours instead of waiting up to 10 working days by post. This accelerates the process for newly self-employed residents and landlords.
HMRC has rolled out a faster online route for self-assessment registration, eliminating the traditional postal delay. From September 2026, most applicants can access their Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) through their Personal Tax Account on GOV.UK in approximately 72 hours, compared to the previous 10 working days or longer for postal delivery.
Key Deadline & Process
The 5 October 2026 registration deadline remains unchanged for the 2025/26 tax year. Applicants can now:
- Complete the online form through their Personal Tax Account (the new route since September 2026)
- Or use the standard self-assessment sign-up page for the traditional process
- Receive their UTR within 72 hours if using the Personal Tax Account method
Both routes lead to the same compliance obligations—filing by 31 January 2027 and paying any tax owed by the same date. The new online service simply removes the wait, which is especially helpful for those registering late or needing rapid access to their tax reference.
For expats and international residents newly self-employed in the UK, this streamlined approach means you can register online and receive confirmation almost immediately. You'll then have time to set up HMRC-recognised accounting software (required if your income exceeds £50,000) and prepare for quarterly filings under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax rules. If you have freelance income or rental earnings, register early—the faster processing window makes 5 October less of a cliff-edge deadline.
