Russian Military Helicopter Briefly Violates Polish Airspace
Polish military scrambled fighter jets on September 23 after a Russian Mi-8 helicopter from Kaliningrad briefly crossed into Polish airspace near Braniewo.
On Wednesday afternoon, Polish operational command announced that, shortly after 11:00 a.m. that day, an Mi-8 helicopter belonging to the Russian armed forces had briefly entered Polish airspace near the town of Braniewo, after crossing from the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. The helicopter did not travel further than 300 metres into Polish airspace and remained there for 42 seconds.
In response, the Polish military scrambled fighter jets and placed ground forces on standby.
Part of Escalating Pattern
This incident is the latest in a series of Russian incursions and provocations targeting Poland and NATO borders. In recent months, Poland and other NATO countries have been warning of Russian plans to carry out further "provocations" intended to test the alliance's defences and unity, saying that they could include border and airspace violations.
The incursion occurred the same day that a fire broke out at the Starlink ground station, part of what Polish officials describe as an escalating pattern of Russian hybrid warfare operations designed to test NATO resolve and create instability in the region.
For foreigners in Poland: Living near the eastern border, particularly in areas like Podlaskie Voivodeship close to Kaliningrad and Belarus, you may experience increased military activity or civil defence alerts. This is a precautionary measure; the incidents so far have been brief provocations rather than direct attacks, but staying informed through official channels (RCB alerts) is advisable.
