Rhine in Flames (Rhein in Flammen®) transforms Koblenz's riverbanks for three days of summer festivities. The festival turns the banks of the Rhine and Moselle around the Deutsches Eck into a real event mile, featuring a diverse summer music festival that invites visitors to dance and relax on all three days.
Friday, August 7 features artists and acts of various genres plus food and drink; Saturday, August 8 showcases a drone show and high-altitude fireworks above Ehrenbreitstein fortress; and Sunday, August 9 is a family day across the entire festival grounds.
The spectacular event draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to watch Europe's largest passenger boat parade—a convoy up to 5.5 kilometres long carrying 35,000 passengers—as up to 60 ships glide along the 17-kilometre Rhine stretch from Koblenz via Rhens, Brey, Lahnstein and Braubach to Spay. As darkness falls, passengers enjoy the return trip watching houses and castles lit up by fireworks.
Practical details for visitors: Arrive early to secure good viewing spots along the banks around Deutsches Eck (German Corner), or book a ticket on one of the boat cruises in advance if you want a guaranteed view from the water. The cable car between Ehrenbreitstein Fortress and the festival grounds will have extended wait times on Saturday.
