Trump Administration Cuts GLP-1 Weight Loss Drug Prices Through New TrumpRx Platform
Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly announce major price reductions for popular weight-loss medications Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound, effective January 2027. Medicare negotiated prices drop by 70% or more, while new direct-to-consumer TrumpRx program offers $350/month pricing.
The Trump administration announced September 1 sweeping price cuts for GLP-1 receptor agonist medications, signed deals with manufacturers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly that will dramatically lower out-of-pocket costs for weight-loss and diabetes drugs starting January 2027.
Price Changes
Novo Nordisk's semaglutide medications (Ozempic and Wegovy) will see monthly prices reduced from approximately $1000 and $1350 to $350 when purchased through TrumpRx, a new government platform launching in 2026. Additionally, the new Medicare price for Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus drops from a list price of $959 to $277 per month, with higher-dose Wegovy priced at $386 per month.
Novo Nordisk will also set a $675/month US list price effective January 1, 2027 for Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus, targeting affordability for high-deductible and coinsurance plan designs. Medicare and Medicaid will benefit from reduced prices for GLP-1 drugs, with Medicare covering obesity treatments for the first time.
What This Means for Expats and Foreign Residents
If you are on a work visa, student visa, or any lawfully present immigrant status with private insurance in the U.S., these price reductions could substantially lower your out-of-pocket costs for weight-loss treatment starting in 2027. However, note that immigrant eligibility for ACA Marketplace subsidies is narrowing: starting January 1, 2027, many categories of lawfully present immigrants including refugees, asylees, domestic violence survivors, and trafficking survivors will lose eligibility for Marketplace premium tax credits, with only green card holders, certain Cuban and Haitian entrants, and COFA nations residents remaining eligible. If you rely on Marketplace coverage with subsidies and fall outside these categories, work with a broker to explore your options well before January 2027.
