Germany's startup ecosystem hit a record high in the first half of 2026, with 3,053 new tech companies founded—52% more than the second half of 2025 and exceeding all of 2024's total. Artificial intelligence is the primary driver of this entrepreneurial surge.
The first six months of 2026 saw the founding of a record 3,053 fledgling tech companies, according to a study by the German Startups Association and the database Startupdetector. The figure represents a 52 percent increase over the second half of 2025, with more than one-third (1,038) of the new start-ups involved in artificial intelligence.
According to German Startups Association Chairwoman Verena Pausder, "Germany has never seen this level of entrepreneurial momentum before," with AI having become the main driver of new business creation by significantly lowering the barriers to founding companies. Berlin remained the country's leading start-up hub with 429 new companies, although its growth lagged that of other regions, and Hamburg overtook Munich for the first time in years.
