Electric buses arrive in Silesian metropolis as Poland accelerates green transit
Spanish manufacturer Irizar completed delivery of 31 electric buses to the Upper Silesian metropolitan area, expanding public transport options across four major cities and supporting Poland's transition to zero-emission mobility.
The Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia (Upper Silesia–Zagłębie Metropolia, or GZM) has taken delivery of 31 new battery-electric buses from Spanish manufacturer Irizar e-mobility. The buses, which were technically accepted and presented earlier in the year, are now operational across the region's public transport network.
Deployment and Scope
The new Irizar ie buses are assigned to four municipal operators serving major regional centers: Sosnowiec, Świerklaniec, Katowice, and Gliwice. This deployment represents a significant step in modernizing public transport in one of Poland's most important industrial and urban regions, historically centered on coal and steel production.
The delivery adds to broader European and Polish efforts to replace diesel-powered buses with zero-emission alternatives, reducing urban air pollution and supporting climate commitments. The fleet will provide operational experience across diverse routes and passenger loads in the metropolitan area.
For expats and foreign residents relying on public transport in Silesia, the arrival of modern electric buses improves comfort, reliability, and air quality on commutes. If you use buses in Katowice, Gliwice, Sosnowiec, or Świerklaniec, you may notice quieter, cleaner vehicles on certain routes—part of a wider transition that is expected to continue over coming years.
