Canada Carbon Rebate Claims Close October 30; Unclaimed Payments Worth Thousands
Canadians who missed filing for the carbon rebate have until October 30, 2026 to claim retroactive payments under proposed legislation, with families potentially owed up to $1,800 in back payments.
The federal government has proposed a deadline of October 30, 2026 for the Canada Revenue Agency to process any remaining Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) claims from previous years. Under Budget 2025 legislation (Bill C-31), no CCR payments will be issued for tax returns filed after that date.
The CCR, which provided quarterly payments to offset federal carbon pricing costs, ended in April 2025 when the federal fuel charge was eliminated. However, the program continues to process retroactive claims from individuals who filed their taxes late or are only now discovering they were eligible.
Who May Still Be Owed Money
- Anyone who failed to file their 2021–2024 tax returns while residing in a CCR-eligible province (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, or Newfoundland and Labrador)
- Students, newcomers, and others who simply didn't file during those years
- Families of four could claim up to $1,800 in Alberta, $1,504 in Saskatchewan, $1,200 in Manitoba, or $1,120 in Ontario for the 2024–25 benefit year alone
If you haven't filed taxes for 2021 through 2024, contact the CRA immediately to file retroactively. Check your CRA My Account to see what you're personally owed. File before October 30, 2026, to secure any outstanding payments. Newcomers and expats who worked in CCR-eligible provinces during 2021–2024 should verify their eligibility and file any missed returns now—this is free money with a hard deadline approaching.
