New CRA Pre-Filled Tax Return Service Launches March 2027—File by October 31 to Qualify
The Canada Revenue Agency is launching an optional pre-filled tax return service in March 2027 for eligible individuals. To qualify, you must file your 2025 tax return by October 31, 2026, and confirm your personal information is current in your CRA My Account.
The CRA is introducing a new pre-filled tax return service launching in March 2027, with approximately one million people expected to receive invitations in the service's first year. This new tool will pre-populate many common income and deduction fields based on information the CRA already holds—from employers, financial institutions, and other sources—potentially reducing filing time and errors.
How to Get Ready
To be eligible for the service when it launches:
- File your 2025 tax return by October 31, 2026
- Sign into your CRA My Account, confirm all personal information is current, and switch your correspondence preference to electronic mail
- Keep your contact details and address up to date
The CRA expects approximately one million people to receive invitations for the service during its first year. Invitations will be rolled out in phases, so not everyone eligible will receive one immediately at launch.
What Pre-Filling Means
The CRA will use information it has already received—T4 slips, T5 investment income statements, RRSP contribution receipts, mortgage interest paid, child benefit amounts, and other standard deductions—to draft a return for you. You review it, confirm accuracy, and make any corrections or additions before filing. This is optional; you can still file your own return the traditional way if you prefer.
What this means for newcomers and expats: If you're new to Canada or recently settled, filing by October 31 puts you in the pool for future eligibility. This service will be especially helpful if you have straightforward employment income and few deductions. Self-employed individuals and those with complex returns may still prefer traditional filing, but the pre-filled option could save time for many expat households.
