Free Windrush Day Celebration in Brixton This Sunday — Lunch & Live Music
A free community festival honouring the Windrush Generation takes place in Windrush Square on Sunday 28 June with complimentary lunch for elders, Caribbean food market, live music, and 'Untold Stories' exhibition.
Ostensibly a day honouring the Windrush Generation and their unparalleled impact on British life, it doubles as one of the best free community events on London's calendar. While the headline act is the heartwarming complimentary lunch provided to Windrush elders, everyone else is fully catered for with a sprawling Caribbean food market, live music and family fete vibes courtesy of event planning and entertainment collective Just Vibez.
The event takes place this Sunday, 28 June, from 12pm to 7pm in Windrush Square, Brixton (SW2 1EF).
What to Expect
The celebration centres on recognising the Windrush Generation — the men, women and children who arrived in the UK from Caribbean countries between 1948 and 1971, invited to help rebuild post-war Britain. Their contributions to British society, from the NHS to public transport to the arts, have been immense.
Take a breather from the food to browse the outdoor 'Windrush Untold Stories' storyboard exhibition, which shares personal histories and experiences of the Windrush community.
Expect live performances throughout the afternoon, Caribbean cuisine from street food vendors, and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere. The event is completely free to attend, with no tickets or registration required.
For Foreign Residents & Newcomers
If you're new to the UK, Windrush Day offers important cultural context about Britain's Caribbean community and post-war immigration history. It's an opportunity to learn about a significant chapter in British history while enjoying authentic Caribbean culture, music and food in one of London's most diverse neighbourhoods.
Brixton is easily accessible via the Victoria line (Brixton station). The square itself is right in the heart of Brixton, surrounded by the famous Brixton Market, independent shops, and vibrant street life. Arrive early if you want to secure a good spot, as these free community events tend to draw large, enthusiastic crowds.
