What Are Willkommensklassen?
Willkommensklassen (welcome classes) are intensive German instruction programs in small groups of 12–15 students lasting 6 to 12 months, aiming to reach B1 language level before transitioning into mainstream classes. Also called Vorbereitungsklassen or Übergangsklassen (Ü-Klassen), these classes prepare children to enter regular schools by teaching language and German culture.
Who Qualifies?
Access to Willkommensklassen is available in all 16 states, though provision varies locally. In Berlin, Willkommensklassen are available from Grade 3 onwards; children in Grades 1–2 are usually placed directly into regular classrooms.
How the Transition Works
Children can start school even without German skills; public schools offer introductory German programs designed for international students that help children learn the language step by step while gradually joining regular classes, with teachers well-trained in supporting non-native speakers.
During the mandatory school entry medical examination, your child's German skills are assessed and the school decides what support is needed, which may include Willkommensklassen, additional lessons, or specially trained educators.

When you enroll your child at the local Schulamt (school authority), be honest about language ability. Don't try to hide gaps—the system is designed to support. Children in Willkommensklassen typically transition to regular classes within six to twelve months; these classes are small, structured around language acquisition, and far less stressful than being placed directly in a German-language mainstream lesson on day one.
Many German states also offer free, optional first-language instruction (Erstsprachenunterricht, or ESU), where children can maintain their home language; ask your school directly whether it's offered in your child's language.
