Ukrainian Residents Must Confirm Identity by August 31 or Lose Legal Status
Thousands of Ukrainian nationals in Poland with PESEL UKR status face an urgent deadline: confirm identity at a local municipal office by August 31, 2026, or risk losing legal residency from September 1.
Starting September 1, 2026, any Ukrainian citizen who received a PESEL number with UKR status but failed to confirm their identity in person at a municipal (gmina) office by August 31 will have that status automatically revoked and will be classified as "NUE" — illegal resident — regardless of how long they've lived in Poland.
This requirement stems from Poland's transition of Ukrainian temporary protection from certificate-based status to integrated PESEL registration. While temporary protection itself remains extended until March 4, 2027, the digital identity confirmation is now mandatory.
