UK Wildfires Hit Record Levels as Temperatures Reach 38.1°C
Firefighters battled record numbers of wildfires across England and Wales on August 14, the UK's hottest day of the year, destroying homes in Stourbridge and prompting emergency evacuations.
Record Heat and Record Fires
Wildfires in England and Wales hit a record level on Friday, as temperatures soared to 38.1°C. The wildfires across the West Midlands saw several houses burned to the ground and have been "one of the most significant" incidents the region's fire service has ever dealt with.
A child and three firefighters were taken to hospital following the wildfire in Stourbridge. Prime Minister Andy Burnham urged the public to take extra care during a visit to Stourbridge, warning that "Britain is a tinderbox right now."
A Summer of Extremes
As the country endures the fifth heatwave of what is expected to be its hottest summer ever, it is dealing with more outbreaks of fire than ever before. The number of wildfires had now exceeded last year's total of 1,017.
If you are living in or planning to travel to central England during the summer months, be aware of heightened wildfire risk and any local fire restrictions or advisories. Check Met Office warnings regularly and follow evacuation orders immediately if you're in an affected area.
