UK tightens university compliance rules for international student visas
New student visa compliance requirements took effect on 1 June 2026, placing stricter reporting duties on UK universities that sponsor international students.
Changes to student visa compliance rules for universities took effect on 1 June 2026, marking the latest phase of the UK government's broader immigration crackdown. The measures impose tougher monitoring and reporting obligations on educational institutions that hold Tier 4 sponsor licences.
What's changed for universities
Universities must now meet enhanced standards around attendance tracking, course progress monitoring, and timely reporting of student non-compliance to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). The backdrop to these changes is a ramping up of enforcement action. The number of UK employers losing sponsor licences tripled at the end of 2025 to 3,100 – the highest since records began. More than 1,500 employers were stripped of their sponsor licence between October and December, up from 541 in the previous three months.
What this means for international students
If you're an international student in the UK, your university is now under closer scrutiny from the Home Office. Missing classes, falling behind on coursework, or failing to update your contact details could trigger a report to UKVI and potentially affect your visa status. Make sure you respond promptly to any communication from your university's international office, attend all required sessions, and keep your university informed of any address changes or course switches. If your institution loses its sponsor licence due to compliance failures, your visa could be at risk.
