TTC Station Supervisors Vote to Strike Over First Contract

Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) station supervisors, represented by CUPE Local 5585, voted overwhelmingly last week to authorize a strike as negotiations for their first collective agreement stall. The union said 88 of its 115 members participated in the vote, with 97 percent voting in favor of a strike mandate.

What's at Stake

Station supervisors are responsible for overseeing the safe operation of subway stations, supervising station staff, responding to emergencies, and investigating incidents across the transit system. The union alleges that bargaining has stalled and accuses the TTC of seeking concessions including split shifts, reduced sick leave protections, elimination or freezing of shift premiums, and disability provisions inferior to those provided to other unionized TTC employees.

Station supervisors organized with CUPE in 2025 after raising concerns about workplace safety and staffing. The role has increasingly involved responding to security incidents and emergencies on the transit system. The union said it remains committed to reaching a negotiated settlement and has offered to return to the bargaining table on August 11, hoping continued negotiations will avoid any disruption to regularly scheduled transit service.
