TTC Line 1 subway closures this weekend; GO Transit service still adjusting
The TTC is closing Line 1 Yonge-University between Finch and Sheppard-Yonge stations this weekend (September 27–28, 2026) for infrastructure work. Combined with ongoing GO Transit cuts, newcomers navigating Toronto must plan ahead for transit disruptions.
This Weekend's Closures
TTC Line 1 will be closed between Finch Station and Sheppard-Yonge Station this weekend. The TTC is closing Line 1 Yonge - University subway between St Clair and College stations from Monday September 21 until Thursday, September 24, with regular train service resuming Monday, September 28.
Ongoing Service Changes
GO Transit is cutting or reducing service on the Lakeshore West, Barrie and Stouffville lines, with some cancelled trains replaced by additional GO bus service on routes 12, 65, 68 and 71. These changes are expected to continue until spring 2027.
Navigating Disruptions
- Check TTC.ca and gotransit.com before traveling
- Download the official TTC and GO apps for real-time alerts
- Consider alternative routes: streetcars, buses, or cycling
- Allow extra time when key subway lines are closed
For newcomers unfamiliar with Toronto's transit network, these frequent closures and service changes can be frustrating. The good news: there are usually alternative routes available. Use the "Trip Planner" features on both TTC and GO websites, which automatically update for planned closures and can suggest bus or streetcar alternatives to your destination.
