Bald Range Wildfire Forces Evacuation of Entire Summerland Community in B.C.
Thousands of residents from Summerland and surrounding areas in British Columbia remain evacuated as the rapidly spreading Bald Range wildfire continues to grow. The fire claimed its first confirmed wildfire-related fatality of 2026.
The Crisis Unfolds
The entire District of Summerland has been ordered to evacuate as the rapidly growing Bald Range wildfire continues to spread west of the community. The evacuation order was issued early Saturday morning as the fire, which was estimated at approximately 5,000 hectares Friday night, continued to advance toward Summerland. The wildfire itself is still listed at an estimated 10,340 hectares in size.
About 12,000 people from Summerland and thousands more from the surrounding area remain evacuated from their homes on Sunday due to the Bald Range fire. The RCMP have confirmed the first wildfire-related fatality of 2026. Police said Sunday an 80-year-old woman died while trying to evacuate the Meadow Valley area northwest of Summerland, B.C., as the Bald Range fire grew.
What Comes Next
It may take days to weeks for evacuees of the Bald Range wildfire to return home. Most evacuees have headed to Penticton for support, where they are being urged to stay with family or friends if they can due to limited accommodations. Highway 97 is closed south of Peachland in both directions.
For foreigners and expats in British Columbia or neighbouring provinces, this wildfire demonstrates the importance of staying alert to emergency alerts in summer months. If you live or travel in the Okanagan region or similar fire-prone areas, monitor Emergency InfoBC (emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca) for evacuation orders and keep emergency supplies ready during wildfire season, particularly in July and August.
