Steel giant Stelco slashes 350 jobs in Hamilton amid U.S. tariff crisis
Stelco Holdings is laying off up to 500 workers across two Ontario plants, idling operations beginning October 9 as U.S. tariffs devastate Canada's steel industry. The cuts expose how trade tensions reverberate through manufacturing supply chains.
Stelco Holdings Inc. announced on September 28 that it will idle its cold-rolled and coated steel operations at its Hamilton plant, resulting in up to 500 job losses across Hamilton and Lake Erie Works facilities. The layoffs, beginning October 9, represent one of the latest cascading effects of ongoing U.S. trade tariffs that have hit Canada's steel sector hard.
The union representing workers says the company told them ongoing U.S. tariffs on steel are a primary reason for Stelco's decision. The job cuts are the latest in a string of tariff-linked layoffs in the province and come after plans for more than 1,000 job cuts at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie and the closure of ArcelorMittal's Hamilton wire-drawing mill.
The Tariff Domino Effect
- U.S. President Donald Trump levied tariffs on steel products from Canada of up to 50 per cent under its Section 232 duties about a year-and-a-half ago
- The latest round of layoffs in Ontario's steel belt highlights the ripple effects of U.S. tariffs as their impact reverberates through Canada's manufacturing supply chain
- Stelco said it was concentrating steel production at its Lake Erie Works plant in Haldimand, Ont., and that job opportunities at the Haldimand plant will be offered to laid off Hamilton workers
For expats and foreign workers: If you work in manufacturing or steel-related sectors in Ontario, or plan to relocate to industrial hubs like Hamilton, be aware that tariff-driven layoffs are ongoing. Check with local labour groups and provincial supports—Ontario is ramping up retraining services. Career diversity and skills adaptation are increasingly important as traditional manufacturing faces structural challenges.
