Skilled Worker Visa Temporary Shortage List Expires 31 December 2026; RQF Level 6 Requirement Remains
The Temporary Shortage List, which allows certain mid-skilled roles below degree level to qualify for UK Skilled Worker sponsorship, is set to expire on 31 December 2026. Employers and migrant workers relying on TSL roles face a hard deadline unless the government extends the list.
The UK's Temporary Shortage List (TSL), introduced in July 2025 as a transitional measure, is set to expire at the end of 2026, leaving uncertainty for employers and international workers in mid-skilled occupations.
TSL Expiry and Visa Sponsorship Changes
Some RQF 3-5 roles on the ISL remain eligible for sponsorship, but the list is set to expire on 31 December 2026 unless extended. The Temporary Shortage List (TSL) allows some jobs below RQF Level 6, such as skilled trades and technical roles, to qualify for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, and is temporary and reviewed regularly, which means occupations can be removed as labour market conditions change.
Qualifying sectors include construction, engineering, IT support, automotive, and selected creative and business support roles. Roles at RQF Levels 3 to 5 will only remain eligible if they appear on the Immigration Salary List (ISL) or the Temporary Shortage List (TSL), with the TSL set to expire by 31 December 2026, removing transitional access for lower-level roles.
Employers should begin planning now for the transition. Restrictions can apply to dependants, and employers face stricter compliance obligations under the current system, making it critical to choose the correct SOC code and maintain sponsorship compliance.
What this means for you: If you're a skilled tradesperson, IT technician, or creative professional from outside the UK currently on a TSL-eligible role, or hoping to sponsor a visa in these fields, the clock is ticking. After 31 December 2026, mid-skilled roles (RQF 3–5) will no longer qualify for Skilled Worker sponsorship unless they appear on the Immigration Salary List (ISL), which typically offers lower salary thresholds but only covers select occupations. Start your visa application now if eligible, or explore the ISL to confirm future eligibility. Employers must review their sponsorship strategy and workforce plans urgently.
