Europe's First Sikorsky Firehawk Helicopters Manufactured in Poland
PZL Mielec, a Lockheed Martin facility in southeastern Poland, has begun production of Europe's first Sikorsky S-70 FIREHAWK firefighting helicopters, marking a milestone for the continent's emergency response capabilities.
Poland as European Aviation Hub
On July 14, 2026, PZL Mielec in the city of Mielec, Poland—a subsidiary of U.S. defense contractor Lockheed Martin—commenced production of Europe's first Sikorsky S-70 FIREHAWK firefighting helicopters. Two aircraft are currently under construction for the Czech Republic Ministry of the Interior in partnership with Czech aviation firm Česká letecká servisní (ČLS) and United Rotorcraft.
The FIREHAWK is a purpose-built variant of the Black Hawk helicopter equipped with a 1,000-gallon water tank, retractable snorkel, twin engines, and night-vision capability—systems proven effective in the most demanding wildfires in the United States. The aircraft will enable rapid, all-weather suppression missions and, through the European Commission's RescEU program, extend emergency support to neighboring nations facing intensifying wildfire threats.
Broader European Emergency Network
Beyond firefighting, the aircraft will also support emergency relief following floods, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. PZL Mielec President Janusz Zakręcki emphasized the role of Poland as "a key European manufacturing center" while highlighting "the growing importance of international cooperation in addressing natural disasters."
The program underscores Europe's strategic move toward self-reliant, high-technology capabilities and represents a concrete example of Poland's growing role in advanced aerospace manufacturing for civilian and defense applications.
For expats in Poland, particularly those in manufacturing, defense, or emergency services, this signals Poland's expanding presence in European industrial supply chains and technology transfer—opportunities that often create local employment and business partnerships.
