Three Prisoners Given Whole Life Orders for Murdering Inmate
Three convicted killers have been sentenced to whole life orders for murdering fellow prisoner Kyle Bevan at HMP Wakefield last November. They will never be released from prison.
Three prisoners will never be released from jail after being sentenced on Thursday for the murder of a fellow inmate at high-security HMP Wakefield in West Yorkshire. Convicted killers Mark Fellows, 45, Lee Newell, 57, and David Taylor, 64, fatally stabbed Kyle Bevan in his cell last November before tucking him into bed and leaving him to bleed out.
Sentencing Details
Fellows and Newell were already serving whole life orders when they killed Bevan, meaning they would never have been released in any case. Judge Mrs Justice McGowan imposed "new and separate" whole life orders on both men for Bevan's murder. Taylor was given a whole life order for Bevan's death on top of offences he was on remand for at the time, including the murder of a missing 24-year-old woman and the attempted murder of a police officer.
Bevan, 33, was serving a life sentence with a minimum 28-year tariff for murdering his partner's two-year-old daughter, Lola James, in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, in 2020. CCTV footage showed the three defendants following Bevan into his cell on 4 November and emerging less than five minutes later in what prosecutors described as "a satisfied, job-done mood."
Understanding UK Justice
For those unfamiliar with the UK justice system, a whole life order is the most severe sentence available, reserved for the most serious murder cases. As of June 2023, there were 65 prisoners serving whole life orders in the UK. This case highlights the strict approach UK courts take toward violence within the prison system, with additional severe sentences handed down even to those already serving life terms.
