Exotic Porcupines on the Loose Near Warsaw After Suspected Escape
Authorities in the Mazovia region are searching for at least three porcupines that have appeared in gardens and homes near Warsaw since mid-August. Officials urge residents to report sightings and exercise caution around the animals, which likely escaped from a private owner.
Since August 11, animal welfare authorities and local police have been tracking multiple porcupine sightings across the Mazovia region (województwo mazowieckie), the province surrounding Warsaw. The incidents began in Łomianki on August 11, where the first porcupine was captured and a second was found nearby.
On August 14, residents of Leoncin, a commune in east-central Poland, alerted authorities after a porcupine entered their property, sampled garden plants, and then entered their home. A veterinarian confirmed the captured animals were healthy.

Porcupines are large rodents native to Africa and Asia, covered in distinctive long defensive quills. They do not occur naturally in the wild in Poland, though some are kept by private individuals. The foundation is asking residents to check courtyards, green areas, and potential shelters while exercising caution—porcupines can be aggressive when threatened.
If you live in or visit the Mazovia region, be aware of your surroundings in gardens and near vegetation. Report any porcupine sightings to local authorities or animal welfare organizations immediately. Do not attempt to approach or handle the animals.
