Poland Tightens 800+ Child Benefit Rules for Foreign Families
From February 2026, foreign parents must prove active employment and Polish school attendance to receive the 800+ child benefit. Around 150,000 Ukrainian refugees face automatic payment suspension until they reapply online.
Poland has significantly tightened eligibility rules for the 800+ child benefit (800 plus) — the monthly 800-zloty (PLN) payment per child available to all families with dependent children up to age 18.
New Employment and Schooling Requirements
Starting February 1, 2026, the Polish Social Insurance Institution (ZUS) stopped automatic payments to approximately 150,000 Ukrainian refugees and other foreign beneficiaries. Benefits will resume only after parents submit new applications proving two conditions:
- Active employment: Acceptable evidence includes an employment contract, civil-law commission contract, self-employment with ZUS contributions, or registered unemployment status. The contribution base must equal at least 50% of the minimum wage (30% for start-ups on reduced ZUS rates).
- Polish school attendance: Children must attend a Polish school or kindergarten. Families who left Poland for more than 30 days or whose children study remotely outside the country are no longer eligible.
An exception applies to families with disabilities—they may receive assistance without proof of employment.
Broader Policy Rollout
The tightened rules initially applied to Ukrainian citizens holding "UKR" temporary protection status. From June 1, 2026, the same stricter conditions will extend to all third-country nationals (non-EU/EFTA, excluding UK citizens covered by the Withdrawal Agreement).
The government argues the reforms close loopholes exploited by "benefit tourists" and encourage labour-market participation. However, NGO Fundacja Ocalenie has warned the changes risk pushing vulnerable single mothers toward the grey economy.
What This Means for Expat Parents
If you are a foreign national with dependent children and currently receive or plan to apply for 800+ benefits, you must act before June 1, 2026. Gather employment documentation (payslips, contracts, or unemployment registration) and confirmation that your children attend a Polish educational facility. Apply online through PUE/eZUS, the mZUS mobile app, the Emp@tia portal, or your bank's online service. Missing the deadline or failing to provide evidence may result in benefit suspension or rejection of your application.
