Poland Pursues Third LNG Terminal to Strengthen Energy Security
Poland has approved construction of a third liquefied natural gas terminal at the Bay of Gdańsk, aiming to boost imports and reduce dependence on single supply routes. The facility will be a floating vessel (FSRU) capable of receiving and storing LNG.
Poland's government has approved plans to build a third liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, further diversifying the country's energy infrastructure and cementing its position as a potential regional gas hub. The new floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU)—a specialized vessel capable of receiving, storing and regasifying LNG—will be moored in Gdańsk Bay alongside a second FSRU already under construction in South Korea.
Energy infrastructure expansion
- Poland currently operates one LNG terminal in Świnoujście (capacity: 8.3 billion cubic meters/year, operational since December 2015)
- A second FSRU terminal is under construction in South Korea and scheduled to open in Gdańsk Bay in 2028, adding 6.1 bcm capacity
- The third terminal represents strategic insurance against supply bottlenecks and geopolitical disruption
- Poland's state gas transmission operator (Gaz-System) has already gauged interest from neighboring countries in LNG imports, indicating potential to serve as a regional gas distributor
The decision reflects Poland's determination to eliminate dependency on Russian natural gas following Moscow's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Since then, Poland has successfully redirected imports to suppliers including Qatar, the US, and Norway. The expansion is critical: Poland's gas demand is forecast to rise from the current 19 billion cubic meters annually to 28 bcm by 2031, driven by economic growth and the potential to supply Ukraine as European integration deepens.
For expats in energy, utilities, or logistics sectors: Poland's LNG terminal expansion creates business opportunities in construction, supply chain management, and regional energy trading. If you work in these fields or are considering relocation to Poland, the energy sector is experiencing substantial investment and hiring.
