Poland Suspends MiG-29 Fighter Deliveries Over Drone Tech Dispute
Poland has halted planned transfers of MiG-29 jets to Ukraine after Kyiv failed to share promised drone technology. Defense officials say deliveries will resume once the technology-sharing agreement is honored.
Poland has suspended the transfer of MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine over an unresolved dispute concerning access to Ukrainian drone technology, according to Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk speaking to TVN24 on June 16.
Technology-for-Jets Deal Stalled
Poland has repeatedly stated that it wants to benefit from Ukraine's expertise in unmanned aerial systems as it develops its own drone capabilities. Under an agreement first reported in January 2026, Poland would transfer up to nine MiG-29 fighters in exchange for access to Ukrainian drone technology. At the time, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to those terms.
Tomczyk stated that the fighter jets would be delivered after the matter is settled. The specific technologies Poland is seeking have not been disclosed, and it remains unclear at what stage the negotiations currently stand.
What This Means for Foreigners
This development is part of broader strains in Polish-Ukrainian relations that could affect everything from cross-border business to reconstruction contracts. If you're involved in defense, technology, or reconstruction sectors with ties to both countries, be aware that bilateral cooperation agreements may face delays or additional scrutiny. The suspension also reflects Poland's increasingly assertive stance on ensuring reciprocal benefits in its support for Ukraine.
