Poland's Major School Curriculum Overhaul Begins September 2026
Starting September 1, 2026, Poland is rolling out a sweeping education reform ('Reform26') introducing revised curricula in all preschools and grades 1 and 4 of primary school, with emphasis on practical skills and student well-being.
Poland is implementing 'Reform26. Compass of Tomorrow'—a comprehensive, phased educational overhaul set to run until 2031/2032. The first major stage launches on September 1, 2026, affecting preschools (przedszkole) and specific primary grades across all Polish schools.
What Changes This September
- New core curriculum for preschools (wychowanie przedszkolne) and grades 1 and 4 of primary school (szkoła podstawowa)
- Practical, project-based learning replaces rote memorization; fewer content details, more competence-building
- Health education and citizenship education (already introduced September 2025) continue to evolve
- Revised physical education curriculum focuses on well-being and lifelong fitness
- Descriptive assessment emphasis: Schools move toward feedback-rich, competency-focused grading over traditional marks
The rollout continues gradually—grades 2, 3, 5–8 will transition over subsequent years, and upper secondary schools shift in September 2027. The new school-leaving examination (matura) formula launches in 2031.
For Expat Families
If your child is in or entering preschool, grade 1, or grade 4 this September, they will experience a notably different learning environment: more group projects, hands-on activities, and less textbook-driven instruction. Foreign children may find the practical, visual approach easier to follow while learning Polish. However, be aware that report cards will emphasize narrative feedback rather than numerical grades; ask your school how they communicate progress to English-speaking parents. If you plan to transition your child to an international or private school, confirm whether they follow Poland's new curriculum or maintain their own standards.
