Man Charged with Plot to Assassinate Polish PM and Defence Minister
Polish authorities arrested a 66-year-old suspect on October 11 after receiving what they called "credible" intelligence of a "high probability" assassination attempt against Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
Poland's security services announced receipt of "credible" information indicating a "high probability" of an assassination attempt against Tusk and his defence minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. A 66-year-old suspect was detained in the city of Wrocław, southwest Poland, and his property was searched.
Interior minister Marcin Kierwiński told broadcaster TVP that the man was "very active in groups promoting extreme views". On Tuesday, the district prosecutor's office in Warsaw announced that he had been charged with nine offences.
Charges and Investigation
Charges against the suspect include "promoting a war of aggression, including in Ukraine, as well as incitement to commit crimes based on nationality, ethnicity, race and political views". At the moment, there is no indication that Krzysztof N. or the group around him were inspired in any way by foreign intelligence agencies, but the issue is still being investigated. The suspect has so far pleaded not guilty on all counts.
This arrest comes amid Poland's heightened security concerns following the school stabbings earlier that week and ongoing vigilance regarding potential Russian hybrid warfare operations designed to destabilize Western support for Ukraine.
For foreigners in Poland: This incident underscores Poland's serious security posture. While the threat appears to have been contained, expats should remain aware of their surroundings, especially near government buildings in Warsaw. Standard travel safety precautions remain advisable.
