Household Electricity Prices at Risk as Government Abandons Price Freeze
Poland's government has signalled no plans to intervene in 2027 electricity pricing, and utilities are preparing tariff applications expected to exceed current levels, ending the two-year price freeze that protected households.
Poland's government has confirmed it has no plans to freeze or administratively control household electricity tariffs for 2027, marking the end of emergency pricing protections introduced in late 2024. The President of Poland's Energy Regulatory Office (URE) is currently reviewing tariff applications from utility companies, and industry sources expect these requests to be higher than 2026 levels.
Current Tariff Status and Expectations
In 2026, regulated household tariffs approved by URE averaged 495 PLN per megawatt-hour (approximately 0.495–0.50 PLN per kWh). Prices on the Polish Power Exchange have been rising since summer, reflecting global energy tensions. While administrative price-setting ended at the start of 2026, household bills were cushioned by locked wholesale rates negotiated in prior years. That shield is now weakening, and URE officials have signalled that next year's tariffs do not necessarily have to rise steeply—but neither will the government intervene to hold them flat. For typical households on the G11 single-rate tariff consuming 1.8 MWh per year, 2026 increases averaged around 3% due to higher distribution charges, despite lower wholesale power costs.
What This Means for Expats and Residents
Prepare for higher electricity bills starting January 2027. A typical household may see increases of 50–150 PLN per month, depending on consumption. If you have the option to switch to a day/night tariff (G12) or weekend tariff (G12w), do so now if you can shift 35% or more of your usage to off-peak hours (nights and weekends)—the savings could offset tariff hikes. Fixed-income earners and families on tight budgets should review their usage and consider energy-efficiency measures such as better insulation and LED lighting. Monitor URE announcements in November and December for final 2027 tariff approvals.
