Poland Confirms Major Medical Data Breach Affecting 19 Million Citizens
Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski announced on August 12 that a cyberattack on MyDr, a leading medical platform, has compromised the personal and health data of nearly 19 million Poles—roughly half the country's population.
Polish authorities confirmed a significant breach of the MyDr system, used by approximately 12,000 medical facilities across Poland to manage electronic medical records. The incident is being investigated by the Central Bureau for Combating Cybercrime and may rank among the largest data leaks in Polish history.
The stolen database contains more than 2 terabytes of sensitive information, including patient prescriptions, medical appointment schedules, medication records, and diagnostic information. Deputy PM Gawkowski stated that authorities believe the attack was financially motivated and are working to determine whether the breach resulted from external cyberattack, internal negligence, human error, or system vulnerability.
The government has advised all Poles to verify whether their data was compromised through the secure government portal BezpieczneDane.gov.pl (Safe Data), with officials recommending citizens also block their PESEL national identification numbers if concerned.
