Poland Sets All-Time Heat Record with 40.5°C as Heatwave Peaks
Poland recorded its highest ever temperature of 40.5°C in Słubice on June 28 as a Europe-wide heatwave moved east. The previous all-time record of 40.2°C from 1921 was broken during the extreme weekend heat.
Poland broke its all-time temperature record on Sunday, June 28, when the town of Słubice on the western border with Germany recorded 40.5°C (104.9°F). The reading surpassed the previous record of 40.2°C set in 1921 in the town of Prószków.
Just a day earlier, Słubice had already set Poland's highest-ever June temperature at 38.9°C, breaking the previous June record of 38.3°C from 2019. Much of Europe saw sweltering temperatures this week, with many countries including France, Germany, Switzerland, Denmark and the Czech Republic also breaking all-time records.
Weather Warnings and Storm Aftermath
On Sunday afternoon, storms were recorded in parts of western Poland following the extreme heat. Meteorologists issued warnings about intense thunderstorms and heavy rainfall across affected regions.
"Heatwaves like this are what we expect to see in a changing climate," said John Kennedy, head of climate information at the World Meteorological Organization. Europe is the fastest-warming continent, experiencing a two-degree rise in average temperatures in the last 50 years, he noted.
For residents and visitors in Poland, extreme heat events like this are expected to become more frequent. Stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours (typically 12:00–16:00), and check air conditioning availability in your accommodation. Public buildings, shopping centres, and many cafés offer climate-controlled refuge during heat emergencies. Monitor IMGW (Polish meteorological service) warnings via their website or app, especially if you have pre-existing health conditions.
