Ontario launches completely redesigned permanent residence pathway
The Ontario Workforce Priority Stream portal opened on August 4, 2026, marking the first opportunity for candidates to enter Ontario's completely redesigned immigration system after the province closed all previous pathways in May. Every former immigration stream has been permanently retired and replaced with a new framework.
Ontario's New Single-Stream Model
Eligible foreign nationals can now be considered for provincial nomination by the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) through the Ontario Workforce Priority Stream (OWPS). This is a single unified pathway that replaces eight former streams, and competition for the remaining 2026 nominations is expected to be intense.
Foreign nationals can be eligible for the OWPS under three pathways: one for higher-skilled workers, one for lower-skilled workers, and one for self-employed physicians registered to practise in Ontario. Ontario had sunset all its previous permanent residence pathways on May 30, 2026, without having put in place any replacements.
What You Need to Know
Candidates must create an Expression of Interest (EOI) through Ontario's online e-Filing Portal. Candidates with valid job offers, strong language scores, and established Ontario work experience are best positioned to score highly in the EOI ranking system. The window to register is open now, but the 30-day clock starts the moment your employer submits the job offer through the Employer Portal.
