NYC Schools Ban AI for K–8 Students, Setting National Precedent
New York City announced a one-year moratorium on student-facing artificial intelligence tools for 600,000 elementary and middle school students starting this fall, the most expansive such ban in the country.
New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and Schools Chancellor Kamar H. Samuels announced a moratorium on student-facing generative artificial intelligence use in schools, effective in the 2026-2027 school year, on student-facing generative AI for children in 2-K through 8th grade. The policy also introduces twice-yearly AI critical thinking modules for high schoolers, limited AI pilots for a small number of high school classrooms and age-appropriate screen time restrictions.
What's Banned and What's Allowed
- All software that uses student-facing generative AI is eliminated, and companion chatbots will be prohibited across all grades. Students with disabilities who use assistive technology, multilingual learners and students participating in career readiness programs, such as computer science, will be given an exception to the policy.
- Teachers will still be permitted to use AI for lesson planning and administrative work that meets city safety standards.
The country's largest school district now has some of the strictest guidelines around younger students using artificial intelligence tools in school, with the one-year moratorium affecting more than 600,000 students.
