Measles Deaths Return to US as Vaccination Rates Fall

Pennsylvania reported two deaths related to measles, both unvaccinated residents. These are the first measles-related deaths in the US in 2026 and the first in Pennsylvania in 35 years. The number of measles cases across the U.S. has exploded, with 36 outbreaks recorded so far this year.

Why This Matters

The measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine effectively protects against infections; however, as vaccine rates drop due to increased skepticism, infections are back on the rise, and public health experts expect the nation will soon lose its elimination status. Measles is the most contagious human virus known, with a fatality rate of one to three deaths per 1,000 cases in the U.S., and can cause pneumonia and brain swelling.

With 93% of all 2026 cases involving people who were unvaccinated or had unknown vaccination status, the disease is finding susceptible hosts in exactly the population the MMR vaccine is designed to protect. The MMR vaccine (or documented immunity) is required for school enrollment in all US states, though exemption rules vary by state.
