Bundestag Passes Automatic Kindergeld Law; Application Requirements to End from 2027
Germany's parliament approved a major bureaucracy-reduction reform on July 9, eliminating application requirements for child benefit. Starting 2027, families will receive Kindergeld automatically upon a child's birth registration, eliminating roughly 300,000 annual applications.
On July 9, 2026, the Bundestag passed legislation that will fundamentally change how families access Kindergeld (child benefit) in Germany. Currently, parents must actively apply for the benefit through the Bundesagentur für Arbeit (Federal Employment Agency), either online or by post. Under the new system, the application requirement disappears entirely.
How the New System Works
- When a child is registered at the Standesamt (civil registry office), that office automatically notifies the Bundeszentralamt für Steuern (Federal Central Tax Office)
- The tax authority then alerts the Familienkasse (family allowance office)
- Kindergeld payments begin automatically without parents taking any action
- The reform is expected to eliminate around 300,000 first-time applications annually
The law still requires approval from the Bundesrat (upper house) before taking effect on January 1, 2027, but a blockade is considered unlikely since the bureaucratic reduction also benefits state administrations. Meanwhile, Kindergeld itself is already higher in 2026: €259 per month per child, up from €255 in 2025.
Parallel to this reform, the government is also considering changes to Elterngeld (parental allowance), though that reform remains in draft form. Family Minister Karin Prien proposed shortening parental leave from 14 to 12 months while increasing the monthly maximum from €1,800 to €1,900, and requiring fathers to take a minimum of three months instead of two.
For expat families: If you're a parent in Germany, this automatic system means less paperwork during an already hectic time after birth. No more coordinating with the Familienkasse or worrying you've missed a deadline. However, ensure your child is properly registered at the Standesamt immediately after birth to guarantee the data flows through to the tax office and payments begin on schedule.
