Karneval 2027 Peaks February 4–10; Major Celebrations in Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Across Germany
Karneval, Germany's "fifth season" carnival, climaxes in early February 2027 with major street celebrations in Cologne and Düsseldorf. Weiberfastnacht (Women's Carnival Day) begins February 4, culminating in Rosenmontag parades on February 8.
The carnival season technically kicks off on November 11, 2026, at 11:11 a.m., but for visitors the real action happens in February 2027, during what locals call the 'crazy days.' Cologne Carnival (Karneval), known as the "Fifth Season of the Year," transforms the city into a sea of costumes, music, and street celebrations. In 2027, the street carnival peaks between February 4th and February 10th.
Key Dates and Events
Altweiber (Women's Carnival Day) occurs Thursday, February 4, 2027 – also known as Altweiberfastnacht, when women symbolically "take over" the city, often cutting men's ties for fun. Rosenmontag (Rose Monday) falls on February 8, 2027, featuring the famous Rosenmontagszug (Rose Monday Parade) with more than 70 floats and wagons, candy tossed into the crowd by the bagful, and brass bands. Sunday features the Schull- un Veedelszoch (School and Neighborhood Parade), often the most creative day.
What This Means for Expats
Karneval is deeply rooted in regional tradition, especially in Rhineland cities. If you're living in Cologne, Düsseldorf, Bonn, or nearby areas during early February, Karneval is unavoidable — and that's a good thing. Streets fill with parades, parties, and themed street celebrations; restaurants and bars are packed; and entire neighborhoods organize events. Expect significant crowds, higher accommodation prices if visiting from outside the region, and partial street closures around parade routes. Participation is informal and welcoming to newcomers; costumes are optional but common. Rosenmontag (Rose-Monday) is the highlight of the German Karneval and takes place on the Shrove Monday before Ash Wednesday. Check local city websites (cologne.de, duesseldorf.de) in December for parade routes and official event schedules.
