July Benefits Hit Highest Amounts: CCB, CGEB Rise 2%, CPP Climbs
Starting July 2026, Canada's major income-tested benefits jump to new highs. The newly renamed Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit replaces the GST/HST credit with 25% higher payments, while Canada Child Benefit maximums climb $160–$135 per child annually, and Old Age Security increases 1.2%. All programs recalculate based on 2025 tax returns filed by April 30.
July 2026 marks benefit year reset—higher amounts roll out
July 2026 is the single most important month for Canada's benefit year, with nearly every federal income-tested payment increasing and resetting based on 2025 tax returns. The Canada Revenue Agency confirmed 2% indexation across most programs, effective July 1–3.
Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit (CGEB) launches with 25% boost
The GST/HST credit—issued for the last time on April 2, 2026—is now replaced by the CGEB, with quarterly payments jumping 25% through 2031. Single individuals will receive up to $679 per quarter (up from $533), couples up to $890 (from $698), and eligible children under 19 receive $234 per quarter (from $184). A one-time top-up equal to 50% of the annual 2025–2026 GST/HST amount was issued starting June 5 to more than 12 million low- and modest-income households. First CGEB payment posts July 3, 2026.
Canada Child Benefit increases follow income thresholds higher
Effective the July 20, 2026 deposit, the CCB maximum rises to $8,157 annually per child under six (from $7,997) and $6,883 for ages 6–17 (from $6,748)—gains of roughly $13.34 and $11.25 monthly per child. The first income threshold where benefits reduce rises from $37,487 to $38,237; the second moves from $81,222 to $82,847. Families must file 2025 returns to qualify. Canada Disability Benefit and Canada Workers Benefit also increase 2%, with new income thresholds rising by roughly 3%.
Why this matters for expats and families
If you have children under 18 and filed your 2025 tax return by April 30, 2026, you are eligible for the higher CCB payments starting July 20. If you receive the GST/HST credit or Canada Disability Benefit, expect your payment notice to show a new program name (CGEB) but the same quarterly schedule. Low- to modest-income households earning under the phase-out thresholds should have received the GST/HST top-up in early June; check your bank account or CRA My Account to confirm. Newcomers and international students who filed 2025 returns are automatically enrolled—no new application needed.
