IRS Direct File Ends for 2026; Free File Remains Available for Low-Income Filers
The IRS has permanently shuttered its Direct File program, which allowed simple returns to be filed free directly with the agency. Taxpayers still have access to Free File and other free filing options for 2026.
The Internal Revenue Service has officially ended its Direct File program for the 2026 tax filing season, marking the closure of a government-run free filing tool that served nearly 300,000 taxpayers in 2025. The IRS has confirmed that its Direct File program won't return for filing season 2026, with the program that began as a pilot promising a simpler, government-run filing option now officially shuttered.
Direct File was created as part of the Inflation Reduction Act's funding for IRS modernization and allowed taxpayers with simple returns (mainly W-2 income and standard deductions) to file directly with the IRS at no cost. Despite favorable reviews and growing usage, the program faced political pressure from lawmakers and commercial tax software companies.
Still Free Filing Available
IRS Free File offers eligible taxpayers with an Adjusted Gross Income of $89,000 or less in 2025 access to tax preparation software at no cost, with eight IRS Free File trusted partners for 2026. IRS Free File Fillable Forms are available to taxpayers who are comfortable preparing and filing their own returns, regardless of income level.
For expats and international workers filing US taxes: If you have a simple return with W-2 income and the Direct File closure affects your filing plans, explore IRS Free File if your income is under $89,000, or use Free File Fillable Forms if you're comfortable preparing electronically. Non-resident aliens and those with complex foreign earned income may still benefit from consulting a US tax professional familiar with expat requirements.
