Transit and Holiday Closures
On Friday, July 3, subways and buses in New York will run on a Saturday schedule. On Saturday, July 4, service will operate on a Saturday schedule with enhanced afternoon and evening service on select subway lines to handle higher passenger volumes traveling to fireworks viewing locations. Extra Rockaway Park Shuttle trains will also run. The MTA notes that some stations, including Clark St on the 1 Line, will be skipped from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. to manage crowding.
Most federal offices close on July 3 (the observed holiday, since July 4 falls on a Saturday). Banks, post offices, and government agencies will be closed both days. The Federal Reserve does not process interbank transfers on holidays. Stock markets remain open, though trading hours vary by exchange.
America250 Celebrations Nationwide
The Semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence—is being marked by major events nationwide. In Philadelphia, the 16-day Wawa Welcome America festival runs from June 19 to July 4 and features concerts, fireworks, and cultural programming. New York's Macy's fireworks begin at 9:25 p.m. and last about 30 minutes, with viewing areas around lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge.
If you're planning to travel for July 4 celebrations, check local transit websites ahead of time. Parking and traffic will be congested in major cities. Allow extra time for your journey, especially if using public transit to reach fireworks or festivals. Electronic filing with government agencies extends filing deadlines if they fall on holidays, but paper filings submitted to USCIS will not be accepted.
