HMRC Launches Automatic MTD Enrollment for Self-Employed: September 2026 Rollout Begins
From September 2026, HMRC will automatically enroll self-employed traders and landlords into Making Tax Digital if they should be using it but haven't registered. The rollout will happen in stages.
HMRC has begun automatically signing up self-employed sole traders and landlords who should be using Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax but have failed to register since the April 2026 deadline. This is a major shift: previously, registration was voluntary, but HMRC estimates roughly one-third of eligible individuals have not yet complied.
What Happens Next
From September 2026, if you should be using MTD for Income Tax but haven't registered, HMRC may automatically enroll you. The process is being carried out in stages over the coming months. Those affected will receive notification from HMRC.
Under MTD, you must keep digital records in compatible accounting software and file quarterly updates online to HMRC, rather than filing a single annual tax return. An annual final declaration is also required.
For expat self-employed individuals and landlords with UK income — whether you work remotely from abroad or manage UK rental properties — this deadline has major compliance implications. Check your MTD status now to avoid automatic enrollment. If you're affected, you can voluntarily register using the improved online service or contact an accountant to handle registration on your behalf.
