Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie Plaza to Charge €5 Admission From October
Visitors to Hamburg's iconic Elbphilharmonie Plaza will have to pay a €5 entrance fee starting October 5th, ending nearly a decade of free public access to one of the city's most popular viewing platforms.
Hamburg's red-green Senate has agreed to introduce an admission fee of €5 (with a reduced rate of €3 for eligible visitors) to access the Elbphilharmonie Plaza from October 5, 2026. The plaza, located 37 metres above ground on the building's eighth floor, opened in 2016 and has since become a major attraction, with around 17,000 people visiting daily and more than 2.2 million visitors recorded last year alone.
Budget Pressures Drive Decision
Officials said the move forms part of the draft budget and is considered unavoidable. The plaza offers panoramic views of Hamburg's harbour and city skyline and has been a free attraction since the concert hall's opening, accessible via the building's famous curved escalator known as the "Tube."
The Elbphilharmonie itself has become one of Hamburg's signature landmarks despite a construction process plagued by delays and cost overruns. The building houses two concert halls with world-class acoustics and has drawn millions of visitors since completion.
What This Means for Visitors
If you're planning to visit Hamburg after October, budget an extra €5 per person for Plaza access (or €3 if you qualify for reduced rates). Concert ticket holders typically get Plaza access included two hours before performances. The fee won't affect the concert experience itself, but casual visitors who previously enjoyed the free viewing platform will now need to pay. Book Plaza tickets in advance during peak tourist season to avoid disappointment, as daily visitor numbers are capped.
