Graduate Route Now Accepts UK-Born Babies as Dependants from 3 August
As of 3 August 2026, babies born in the UK to parents on the Graduate route can now apply as Graduate dependants—a significant expansion of family eligibility previously restricted to children already holding Student dependant status.
From 3 August 2026, the Immigration Rules were amended to allow UK-born children of Graduate route visa holders to apply as dependants on that same route. Previously, only children who already held Student dependant permission could transfer to the Graduate route. This change means babies born during a parent's Graduate permission can now stay in the UK with that parent.
What Changed
- Babies born in the UK while a parent holds Graduate route permission can apply as Graduate dependants
- The child must still meet the relationship, care, and independent life requirements under Appendix Children
- All applications must be made within the UK
Practical Implications
If you're on the Graduate route and planning to have or have recently had a child born in the UK, you can now include that child in your immigration status, keeping the family together during your post-study work period. However, note that the Graduate route itself is shortening—applications made from 1 January 2027 onwards will be limited to 18 months for bachelor's and master's graduates (down from two years). If you're expecting a child or have a newborn, applying for Graduate route dependant status sooner rather than later will secure the longest possible family permission in the UK.
