GO Transit fare hikes and rail service cuts take effect in September; new shuttle route added to McMaster
GO Transit is raising penalty fares for fare evasion and cutting weekday rail service on the Barrie Line beginning September 2026, though a new bus route to McMaster University and Highway 407 campuses offers an alternative for commuters.
Fare Penalties Increase
Under the old policy, the first-time $35 fine and the second-time $50 fine were similar to penalty fares levied in the United Kingdom, acknowledging that mistakes happen. However, a failure to tap should not automatically result in a first-time fine four times higher than not paying for street parking in Toronto ($50). GO Transit has significantly raised penalties for failing to tap Presto cards at proof-of-payment stations, bringing first-time fines to $50—a substantial jump from the previous $35.
Rail Service Changes
The fall schedule change often brings certain service improvements and schedule adjustments to reflect demand and operating changes. But the changes for September 2026 are mostly cuts to rail services. On the Barrie Line, there will be one less weekday round trip between Allandale Waterfront and Union Station. The reduction will affect daily commuters from the GTA's northern regions into downtown Toronto.
New Route 43 to McMaster & Highway 407 Corridor
There is one new bus route, Route 43 between Mount Pleasant GO Station in Brampton and McMaster University in Hamilton, via Meadowvale and Highway 407, running mainly in the peak direction, Mondays through Fridays. This new route targets post-secondary students and workers at Highway 407 corridor campuses (including Sheridan College, George Brown, and others), providing a direct shuttle that did not exist before.
For Newcomers & Commuters
If you use GO Transit, pay careful attention when tapping on and off—the new $50 first-time penalty is steep. Make sure Presto card readers are clearly visible at your station; if they're hard to find, report it to Metrolinx. If you commute from Barrie or Allandale Waterfront, check the revised fall schedule and plan for fewer train options during peak hours. If you're a student at McMaster, Sheridan, or other Highway 407 campuses and live in Brampton or central GTA, the new Route 43 may save you time compared to multiple transfers. Transit remains a cost-effective way to get around Greater Toronto and southern Ontario—just be fare-conscious and stay informed on schedule changes.
