Germany Opens Drone Security Centre Amid Rising Threats
Germany has opened a new drone security research centre in Saxony-Anhalt to detect and counter unauthorised drones around airports and critical infrastructure, responding to growing security concerns.
Germany officially opened a new Drone Security Technology Centre in Cochstedt, Saxony-Anhalt, on Tuesday, August 18, marking a significant step in the country's efforts to protect airports, major events, and critical infrastructure from unauthorised drone activity. The facility is integrated into the German Aerospace Centre (DLR) and will research, develop, and test technologies designed to detect and neutralise hostile aircraft.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt and Research Minister Dorothee Bär joined Saxony-Anhalt's state premier Sven Schulze to officially open the centre at the former Cochstedt airport, around 40 kilometres south of Magdeburg. The centre represents Germany's response to an escalating drone threat, with more than 1,000 suspicious drone flights recorded in 2025 alone, particularly over military facilities, airports, and critical infrastructure such as defence companies and port facilities.
