Germany's Digitized Visa Process: Criminal Records Now Available Online
German criminal record certificates are now available through a fully digital application process, simplifying the documentation burden for residence permit applicants and employers.
In October 2026, Germany's immigration administration launched digital processing for criminal record certificates (Führungszeugnis), a key document required for many residence permit applications, naturalisation, and background checks by employers. This shift aligns with a broader digitization effort aimed at streamlining visa and residence permit procedures.
How Digital Criminal Records Work
To apply digitally, you need suitable electronic identification, such as an electronic residence permit with the online identification function, a compatible smartphone and a BundID account.
Important Limitation
The digital option covers certificates for private purposes, but a certificate intended for direct submission to a German authority cannot be issued through this digital route. Check which type you have been asked to provide before applying.
This change reduces bureaucratic friction for residence permit renewals, naturalisation applications, and job-seeker visa applications, all of which typically require a clean criminal record certificate. However, the limitation is important: if your German employer or the Ausländerbehörde (Foreigners' Office) specifically requests a certificate for their official records, you cannot use the digital shortcut and must order the paper version instead. Always confirm with the authority requesting the certificate which format they accept before beginning the digital process.
