German Journalist Freed After Five Months' Detention in Syria
Eva Maria Michelmann, a Cologne-based reporter held by Syrian authorities since January, has returned to Germany following high-level diplomatic efforts by the Foreign Office.
A German freelance journalist detained in Syria for nearly five months has been released and returned home. Eva Maria Michelmann, originally from Cologne, arrived back in Germany on June 19 via Jordan after spending much of her detention in solitary confinement.
Michelmann was arrested on January 18 in the northern city of Raqqa during a Syrian military operation. According to her brother, she spent an extended period in solitary confinement and was in poor health, having lost significant weight. Reports from a Syrian journalist and a released fighter suggested she had been subjected to torture and continuous interrogation.
Diplomatic Pressure Secured Release
The German embassy in Damascus provided consular support and, along with the Beirut embassy, lobbied the Syrian government for her release, with the Foreign Office in Berlin engaged at the highest levels. Syrian authorities initially claimed she had falsely identified herself as Spanish and working for a UN-linked organization, charges her family disputed.
Background and Risks for Journalists
Michelmann had been working as a freelance journalist in Syria since 2022. A Turkish-Kurdish colleague arrested alongside her, Ahmed Polad, remains missing. The case highlights the ongoing dangers faced by foreign journalists working in Syria's conflict zones.
For expats and foreign nationals in Germany, this case underscores the commitment of German consular services to assist citizens detained abroad, even in complex geopolitical situations. If you plan to work in high-risk regions, register with the Foreign Office's crisis prevention list (Elefand) and maintain contact with the nearest German embassy.
