German Business Confidence Surges for Third Straight Month
The Ifo institute's business confidence index hit a five-month high in July as companies grew less pessimistic about the outlook despite Middle East uncertainty. Manufacturing showed particularly strong improvement.
German business sentiment rose for a third consecutive month in July, especially in the struggling industrial sector, and pessimism eased despite the ongoing war in the Middle East. The Ifo institute's closely watched confidence barometer rose to 86.6 points in July, up from 85.7 points in June. Analysts surveyed by FactSet had expected the indicator to remain flat.
Drivers of the Rebound
This rise is driven by "a significant improvement in expectations," with less pessimism regarding the "uncertain situation" in the Middle East, Ifo said in a statement. Across sectors, manufacturing sentiment improved to -9.6 from -12.5, supported by stronger expectations, recovering demand, and easing supply constraints. Services rose to -4.4 from -5.1, while trade improved to -23.4 from -26.7 as firms became less pessimistic. Construction sentiment also increased to -20.4 from -22.8, helped by better expectations and fewer reports of weak order books.
The Cautionary Note
Philipp Scheuermeyer of KfW bank noted that some companies responded to the Ifo survey while a ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran was still in effect. An economic rebound hoped for this year by Germany, which remains mired in a deep industrial crisis, is still threatened by the Middle East war and disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for energy shipments. Energy prices remain highly volatile. They fell on Monday amid an apparent lull in tensions between Tehran and Washington, following more than two weeks of escalation and renewed strikes from both sides.
For expats and investors: The three-month confidence climb suggests Germany's economy may be stabilizing after months of uncertainty. If you work in manufacturing or export-related sectors, sentiment is shifting more positive. However, remain cautious—energy prices remain volatile and the Middle East situation could quickly reverse gains.
