Free School Meals Expand to All Universal Credit Households from September
From September 2026, all children in households receiving Universal Credit will automatically qualify for free school meals—a major expansion expected to cover 500,000 more pupils across England and save eligible families up to £495 per child per year.
New FSM Eligibility Criteria
From the start of the 2026–27 academic year, free school meals eligibility expands to all children from households in receipt of Universal Credit regardless of household earnings. Previously, only families earning under £7,400 per year qualified. More than half a million additional pupils across England are expected to become eligible.
Three types of free school meal will operate: Targeted FSM (pupils in households with earned income under £7,400), Expanded FSM (all other pupils in families receiving Universal Credit), and Universal Infant Free School Meals (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2). Families do not need to apply for these—eligibility is automatic.
Funding and School Planning
The Department for Education has announced over £1 billion over the multi-year spending review period from 2026 to 2029 to fund the expansion, with additional funding allocated through the free school meals expansion grant for the period from September 2026 to March 2027. Schools will need to manage increased meal demand; funding is being provided separately from core allocations.
What This Means for Expat and Newcomer Families
If your household receives Universal Credit—either while you're settling into the UK or during a period of lower earnings—your children are automatically entitled to free meals from September 2026 with no application needed. Check your local authority's website for confirmation of eligibility and any school-specific processes. For families from outside the UK who are on UC due to recent arrival or job transition, this saves a significant proportion of school costs and improves access to nutrition during the school day.
