Two employees at Germany's busiest airport have died after contracting malaria from an infected mosquito believed to have arrived on an aircraft. The rare outbreak marks the first airport-linked malaria deaths in Germany.
Two workers at Frankfurt Airport have died after contracting malaria in what authorities describe as a rare outbreak linked to an Anopheles mosquito imported on a commercial flight. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Germany's national public health authority, identified the infection in mid-July when four airport employees fell ill between July 4 and 6. The outbreak has now grown to six infected workers, with two confirmed dead as of August 27, 2026.
Malaria transmission at German airports is exceptionally rare. The last confirmed case occurred in 2023, also at Frankfurt. The disease spread among staff who had no travel history to malaria-endemic regions, which created diagnostic delays. The RKI stressed that "the lack of a travel history can lead to a delayed diagnosis," and such delays significantly increase the risk of severe illness and death.
Response and Prevention
- Airport operator Fraport has installed mosquito traps on site and advised employees to inform their doctors of workplace exposure
- Captured mosquitoes will be genetically analyzed by the Institute of Tropical Medicine in Antwerp to determine species and origin
- The four remaining infected employees are hospitalized and receiving treatment
