Former DUP Leader Jeffrey Donaldson Convicted of Historical Sexual Offences
Sir Jeffrey Donaldson, once Northern Ireland's most prominent politician, was found guilty on 22 June of 18 historical sexual offences including rape committed against two women when they were children.
Former Democratic Unionist Party leader Sir Jeffrey Donaldson was convicted on Monday, 22 June 2026, at Newry Crown Court of multiple sexual offences including rape, 13 counts of indecent assault, and four counts of gross indecency. The 63-year-old committed the crimes between 1985 and 2008 against two women who were children at the time.
Donaldson, who denied all charges and called them "simply not true" and "just unbelievable," showed no reaction as the jury delivered its verdict at 2:15pm. The former MP, once Northern Ireland's best-known politician, was immediately taken into custody and will remain in prison until his sentencing hearing in September.
Wife Found Complicit
Lady Eleanor Donaldson, his wife, was found to have aided and abetted his crimes following a trial of the facts conducted on mental health grounds. This process tested the evidence but could not result in a criminal conviction against her.
Both victims gave evidence during the four-week trial. The court heard that Donaldson sent one victim a letter in 2020 expressing "regret" for "all the hurt, pain and distress I have caused," though he claimed it was about other behaviour and not related to sexual abuse. One victim testified that she remembered incidents "vividly," including being raped when she was of primary school age.
What This Means for Foreigners
While this case primarily concerns Northern Irish politics and has no direct impact on immigration or visa policies, it represents a significant moment in UK legal and political history. For those living in or moving to Northern Ireland, understanding the political landscape—particularly the role of major parties like the DUP in the devolved government—can be important context for understanding local governance and community relations in the region.
